Eastern Turkey Hunt
The Eastern wild turkey is the most abundant and widespread of all the wild turkey subspecies. These birds livecoast to coast, andnorth to south. They can be hunted from mid-March until the end of May depending on the stateof choice, and habitat type can be varied from southern hardwood swamps to forested mountains. Tim has hunted easterns all over and is currently working with many top-notch outfitters in various states that provide an assortment of hunt packages.
Whether you want to jump start your home season by traveling to South Carolina for a March or early April hunt, hunt the Mid-west for big heavyweight toms, or extend your season by hunting in New York during the entire month of May, Tim has a camp for you.
Eastern Hunting Options:
Option #1: Classic SC Low Country Eastern Turkey Hunt
Tim has hunted at this lodge many times and considers this the best hunt in the Deep South. This lodge has produced a 94% shooting opportunity on the toughest gobblers in the country over the past 5 seasons. These southern turkeys inhabit hardwood swamps, pine plantations and agricultural fields that cover the 7,000 acres of ground that may be hunted.
Lodging and meals are included, and if you go on this hunt, expect to gain a few pounds. The food is wonderful. No more than 4 hunters are in camp at once during turkey season to insure the utmost quality. Semi and fully guided hunts are available, and season runs from March 15 through May 1st. The bag limit is 2 gobblers per day, and five per season. Turkey populations in this area are at an all time high due to several good hatches in a row. If you want to hunt challenging birds and experience the best in Southern hospitality, this hunt is for you.
Option #2: West Central Kentucky Full Service Turkey Hunt
Kentucky is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the hottest turkey hunting destinations in the country. The heaviest bird on record (34.5 pounds) came from Kentucky, and 24-28 pound toms with paintbrush beards are not all that uncommon. This hunt is nothing short of fantastic. This outfitter is located in a county in west central KY that has always ranked in the top three turkey harvest counties in the state, and there is 6,000 acres of prime turkey habitat to hunt that is comprised of mixed woods and cropland.
A limited number of hunts are offered each year, and only 2 to 4 hunters are in camp at a given time. This Hunt includes 3 days - 1x1 for $900 and food and lodging are provided. Over the past couple of years hunter success has been 95%, and many hunters have bagged their two-bird limit. This one books up fast. Tim filmed a successful hunt for Knight & Hale's TV show here in 2003 and again went back and was able to get 3 successful hunts on film for The Hunter's Journal in 2005.
Option #3: Iowa and eastern Nebraska
If you want to hunt for HUGE eastern gobblers, there is no place better than Iowa. Birds from 26-30 pounds are not at all uncommon. This is a three day, fully guided spring gobbler hunt with everything furnished in the way of lodging, meals, decoys, blinds, transportation during the hunt, including pickup and return to Omaha's Eppley Airfield. Outfitter will take care of your hunt application and have your habitat stamp in camp when you arrive. The cost of the spring turkey hunt is $750 plus 199.00 for your tag, drawing fee, and habitat stamp. If you do not draw $181.00 will be refunded directly to you from the Iowa DNR. Prices of licenses subject to change. All hunters have drawn their license with this outfitter in the past few years. This outfit usually runs right at 100% success. In 2006 they averaged 2.2 shots per client in Iowa (on a 1 bird limit) - lots of misses!
Merriam's and Eastern Combo Hunts: This Outfitter offers a unique combo hunt for Merriam's and hybrid gobblers in Nebraska, a short distance across the Missouri river and Eastern's on the Iowa side. These hunts will be limited to 3-4 clients each year. The FOUR DAY hunt is $1250.00 plus the cost of both licenses and fees of $299.00. You can get a second Nebraska tag for an additional $50.00. Prices of licenses subject to change. This gives a hunter the option to take 1 Iowa Bird and 2 NE birds on a 5 day trip. What a deal.
Option #4: Missouri Eastern Hunt
This is a fantastic hunt, and the outfitter is a big name in the hunting industry. He is offering only 6 of these high quality Missouri hunts for next spring. Fully guided, lodging in a new lodge and all meals for 3 days and 2 birds. Thiese hunts are on 1800 acres of prime ground about 90 miles east of Kansas City, MO. That is the closest airport. Hunts will be the last 2 weeks of the Missouri season when hunters are allowed to bag 2 gobblers. The price on this great eastern hunt is $900.
Western Kentucky Full Service Hunt:
Hunt the largest piece of contiguous private land in the state of Kentucky! This is Thompson Center Arms' famous Game Trails...Michael Waddell, Alex Rutledge, Eddie Salter and many other notables make this an annual stop during turkey season. Tim has hunted the property numerous times, and is looking forward to being back at Game Trails in April.
This 3 day package is 2x1 guided, with double occupancy lodging and excellent food included for a price of $1000. The property is a mixture of hardwood forests, pastures and croplands.
